Jim Garrett first started working with metal as a child, quickly progressing from power tools to torches and welders. After receiving training in design and metalsmithing at Syracuse University, Garrett began his career in heavy industry as a seamless pipe mill worker in Pittsburgh, working mostly on large construction projects. He later moved into professional design and metalsmithing work in Vermont and Seattle. As owner of Garrett Metals, the company he established over 30 years ago in Port Townsend, WA, Garrett produces AIA award-winning metal and stone projects for his clients, with a focus on thoughtful, innovative, appropriate design and impeccable craftsmanship. Garrett\'s work explores the contrast between the clean lines and strength of structural steel and the organic forms and claylike shapes that forging brings to metal. Garrett also co-owns the world-renowned Nimba Anvils company, which he purchased with his brother Lester in 2007.
